American Trail Running Association Launches Labeling Program

Colorado Springs, CO —- The American Trail Running Association (ATRA) Board of Directors is pleased to introduce a new labeling program for events. After much discussion and many revisions, the ATRA Board of Directors zeroed in on 15 standards to address safety, course design and marking, terrain, results, awards, logistics, entry limits, entry brochure, delivery, environmental awareness, time limits, financial accountability, impacts, rules/fairness, dogs and music players that are intended to guide race directors through the planning and execution of their events.

Should an event meet at least 12 of the 15 listed standards, an ATRA “label” can be included on entry materials and on the race website. Both the standards and label are available at ATRA’s website, www.trailrunner.com.

“It is our hope at ATRA that both race directors and race participants use the standards as an educational tool,” said Adam W. Chase, president of ATRA. “Participants, especially newcomers to our sport, will learn about the features they should expect from a well-organized trail race. Race directors can incorporate the standards into their new or existing events. When a participant sees an ATRA label on an entry form they will know that they can expect a quality experience that is worth their investment of training, effort, travel, and entry fee.”

Prior to rolling out this program, ATRA conducted a survey to get input from race directors and participants and learned that both groups felt that a program of this type would be beneficial. Through the survey, and after months of planning, the 15 standards were developed all of which the ATRA Board felt should be included in a well-organized event.

To assist ATRA with its roll-out of the program, ATRA’s corporate partner, GoodPeopleRun.com, will offer a forum for race participants to evaluate an event’s adherence to the standards via their online tools. Visit www.goodpeoplerun.com.
The event standards will serve as a good complement to ATRA’s Rules on the Run publication which covers trail etiquette. The Rules on the Run document was released in 2008. Details are available at www.trailrunner.com.

GoodPeopleRun.com Announces Partnership with American Trail Running Association

Annecy, Rhône Alpes, France —— GoodPeopleRun.com (GPR) is pleased to announce a corporate partnership with the American Trail Running Association (ATRA).

ATRA is a non-profit 501 (c ) 3 corporation founded in 1996 whose mission is to represent and promote trail and mountain running. It is a membership-driven association with corporate, race, club, and individual memberships available. Some of its programs include a comprehensive online calendar, a quarterly newsletter – Trail Times, and monthly e-blasts with current information about the sport. ATRA is a member of USA Track & Field, Road Runners Club of America, International Skyrunning Federation, and Running USA.

“By partnering with GoodPeopleRun.com, ATRA members can link up with like-minded athletes through a user-friendly social network. We’re excited about this partnership and look forward to a long-term involvement with Martin and his staff,” said ATRA President Adam W. Chase.

As part of the partnership, GPR will be working with ATRA to introduce and support a 15-point document which ATRA has developed for race directors entitled “event standards”. The event standards will serve as a guide for race directors – new as well as experienced – to help organize their events. In addition, there will be an ATRA event standard label which races can include on their website as well as on their Race Page on GoodPeopleRun.com to communicate their adherence with the standards. For race participants, the document will serve as a guide to learn about certain elements they should be looking for in a quality trail race experience.

Says Chase, “ATRA’s partnership with GPR will allow race participants a forum for evaluating race director’s adherence to event standards. Therefore, the document will not only serve to guide them about what to expect, but also provides them a score sheet for evaluating the trail race experience and sharing those impressions with their ‘Running Mates.’”

GoodPeopleRun.com is the first social network for local running communities. With an innovative location-based News Feed, runners will be able to organize group runs with locals and get each other off the couch. Race directors, running shops owners, coaches and running clubs also benefit from this opportunity to interact with their local running community and become part of the GPR Family.

Howdy!

If you are dreaming of taking part (again?) in The Gore Tex TransRockies Run, this post is for you!

After taking part in this event for the fifth time and loving every part of it, we have decided at GoodPeopleRun to sponsor Teams once again in 2012.

You’re probably eager to see what we’ll offer to up to 15 teams, so lets get down to business:

The sponsorship is both financial and material:

We’ll knock $800 off your Team registration, plain and simple.
I’ll put my humble 5 years expertise in this event to answer any of your questions and we’ll send you updates on how to get ready to take the best out of this event with behind the scene tips and tricks.
We’ll love and cherish you as part of the GoodPeopleRun Team.
And other things that we won’t disclose now, because we like surprises, hope you do too!

So if this even sounds like you and you want to get involved with like minded people to take on that 6 days challenge across the Colorado Rockies, here is all what you have to do:

Registration: Use the “GoodPeopleRun” discount code when you register and only pay for the deposit. You will thus secure a minimum of $200 per Team.

Confirmation: Once you’re in, shoot me an Email at martin(at)goodpeoplerun(dot)com and I’ll get everything sorted with you for the additional $600 and get the logistics going.

Here are the awesome 5 GoodPeopleRun Teams we had onboard for the 2011 TransRockies Run event:

Open Mixed:
Jen LOWERY and Edward MARRAN from Canmore, AB, Canada
Rachel CIESLEWICZ from Park City, UT and myself.

Open Women
Brianna TORRES and Jenny McCARTHY from Flagstaff, AZ
Helene DUMAIS and Rachel PAQUETTE, from Montreal, Canada

Masters Men
Alan LAM and Hugh MAGILL from Calgary, AB, Canada

So if you or close friends would like to get involved, you are all welcome to embark on that wonderful ride, unique social running experience that will forever change the life of the grown up kids that we are. Don’t be shy and talk to us, we’re here to help :-)

In the meantime, jog on!

Esctasy on the trails

August 27th, back on the road after what has been, once again, the highlight of my summer.

Wake up, eat, run, eat, rest, sleep, repeat. The same scenario unfolds and every year the road back to Denver is tainted a bit more with nostalgic feelings. The kind that leaves us quiet, thinking about all the Good People we are leaving behind. For most of them, it means not see each other for another year. I could blame the wilderness of “stage 7” but my stomachache is definitely emotional.

Its feel like coming back from Summer Camp, missing already the camaraderie of like minded people with who I have shared, meals, trails, pain, sweat, tears – saliva – and an general feeling of personal achievement.

I heart TransRockies. Leaving Beaver Creek felt like ending a relationship with 350 runners. Painful break up. The 6 days long runner’s high has come to an end, one of a kind ecstasy that shall leave the runners in withdrawal for another year. In need for more, we will compensate by interacting with some of the “striders” and create life long lasting friendships, for some lucky few, relationships.

The world will keep turning and for the fist time in 6 days, runners will go separate ways, bringing home the unique memories of their own Gore Tex TransRockies Run experience. Priceless.

The Gore Text TransRockies Run is a life changing event. I have had my life changed for the fifth time.

This is how my life will be affected after TRR11

I will miss:
- the sleepy yet smiling faces at breakfast
- beautiful women freshing up at the shower truck right before spitting on the ground
- the smiles, energy and endless enthusiasm of the volunteers at the aid stations
- the afternoon quests for salty food and a quiet place in the shade
- the tangible emotion at the slideshows every night
- the inspiring talent and humility of the top runners in each categories
- the friendly pats on the back, on the butt and hugs, yes runners are touchy!
- the countless “good job”, “keep it up”, “you rock!” shared between participants along the course
- the painful nocturne dilemma between staying in a warm and cozy sleeping bag and satisfy a pressing need to hit the porto paddy
- the relaxing feeling of a massage that will keep me together until I smash my legs again the day after
- the peaceful atmosphere of the “late nights” at the campfire under - and amongst - bright stars
- the welcoming Colorado trails
- the breathtaking coldness of the crystal clear creek water
- the genuine friendship of the Gore Tex TransRockies Run crew
- 350 Good People who I was lucky to share my passion for running with

I’ll now appreciate even more:
- not to “have to” eat as much as I can at 5pm
- the simple luxury of waking up on a dry pillow
- laundry detergent smelling towel
- running up and down a set of stairs, pain free
- interactions with like minded people

Until next year, keep on running, when you’re hurting….

Et si tout commençait là…

Dear Runners, Friends, Dear GoodPeople,

Long time ago, I ran my first XC race. It was a cold rainy day of winter, I was scared. At the first turn after the starting line another kid stepped on my shoe. I lost it, fell on the rocky muddy ground and cut my knee open. I managed to finish the race with one shoe undone and a bleeding knee, I was 7 years old.
Against all expectations, this still remains one of the best memories I have about racing. Despite the fall, injury and position, my parents, close friends, coach and fellow runners were all there to cheer me up and teach me how to get back on my feet, literally, and stay motivated for the next races to come.

Firsts rarely go as planned in life, but as long as you are supported by the right people, your motivation and passion for the right things will never vanish, and you’ll get better and better along the way.

Two years ago, I took this insane bet that I could gather all the Good People of the world around one passion: RUNNING. I have thrown myself into it full swing, leaving everything behind. I have made mistakes, fell hard, been slapped in the face, taken countless “no”s, yet I learned from all of them. This hasn’t been fun everyday, but deep inside I still have a strong faith in the success of that project, because once again I am well surrounded by three dedicated and qualified friends.

In this quest to make GoodPeopleRun come true, I got the chance to meet you all. And for those encounters only, I am grateful already. You have been running partners, colleagues, advisors, friends and competitors who have all positively contributed to make this project, a better one.

Today, tuesday August 2nd, we publicly release GoodPeopleRun. I must admit I am anxious and scared like I was in the starting area of my first XC race. Only one thing has changed and gives me hope that this first time won’t be as painful. You, you all who stand by my side to help me give the ultimate push that will allow GoodPeopleRun to grow successfully.

If you didn’t get an Email, you can start registering here and become part of the GoodPeople.

We have given our best and put our hearts in it, and with your help and comments, we’ll keep improving it so we can all do what Good People do best. Run together.

Humbly yours,
Martin

Pushing through the pain

I usually bust my ass off everytime I’m out there, to take the best out of each workout, you never know when the next one will be.

As mentioned in “Beautiful Spring, welcome back !” I had decided to run easy. So I did. I was trying to reproduce the economical stride of the ultra running champions who I would watch way too many times on youtube, through their accomplishments during the most competitive races in the world. Here I was, becoming Anton Krupicka or Scott Jureck running in Boulder, CO or Geoff Roes kicking it at the end of the recent Chuckanut 50k.

The pace was consistent, comfortable so I could loose focus on the trail’s stones and turns and fully enjoy the warmth of this beautiful Saturday afternoon. As my foot would step steadily on a soft natural mat of brown dead leaves, fresh leftovers of a winter that had left not so long ago; I was on my own yet strangely connected to my surroundings. It was magical.

I was climbing up the trail I’m used to train on until I got to a certain point, a point I actually never went past. I was feeling amazingly fresh, definitely no intention to stop the fun that soon, I kept going into the unknown.
Discovering new trails has always been a big thing to me, especially when alone. Miles were passing by as I was cruising up to a road, and oh surprise, snow ! Well I still hadn’t had enough of my sudden escape into the wild, I kept going. First on a single track and then on the XC Skiing slopes. This definitely reminded me of a run I did back in Canada with Adam Campbell. I made it to the bottom of the ski lifts and as I didn’t see myself running up the slopes, I admitted “I guess that’s enough”. I looked for the bathroom, filled up my water bottle and here I was, rolling smoothly down the new trail I had just found.

I had purposely left phone and watch at home so I had no idea of the time or distance I had run so far, but I was starting to feel my legs. I reminded myself that I was out there for fun but I still had to be careful… well that was just after I fell face down in the snow !!

Ahh lack of experience and youthful enthusiasm… I love when you smack the back of my head saying “tsk tsk Martin, you know if you try and chase this downhill biker you are going to trash your legs”… Whatever, life’s too short, especially when I felt like I have a shot !
We went back and forth chasing each other for a while. I was passing him on very technical session or “hurdleing” the freshly cut tree that had fallen across the trail, and he would overtake me on the rolling parts. This lasted about 10 minutes until he took off for good after he congratulated me on the speed… I smiled. He rode off. I nearly cried !! How painful it was as I did slow down to a more reasonable pace, I was baked, legs trashed, nothing left !!

The “I’m running just for fun” was now far behind, the competitive part of me had taken over and I acknowledged “This is good. If you can keep going with massive pain in the legs, it will get you stronger for the next race, keep it up”. I did. Made it to my flat, grabbed some water and went in the lake soaking my legs.
As I limped back to my appartment, I was shivering from the cold and at this point I had tears in my eyes. For some reason, the pain wouldn’t go away. It was hardly bearable so I layed down on my bed, waiting to feeling better. Such feeling never came and I started cramping so I swallowed 3 Saltstick pills, and jumped into the hot shower, at this point, the benefit of the cold had become the least of my problems.

I eventually felt better after a while and as I type those words I have this pain in my legs that rhymes with this satisfying feeling of great accomplishment.

As much as this can sound dumb to go out for an easy run and come back half broken, this has had a very positive impact on my psychological status, no doubt about it.

Tomorrow, I guess I’ll take it easy,if only I can even dragg myself out of bed !

Keep on running.

Beautiful Spring, welcome back !

Last night, Friday night, was ending another rough week, working overnights to finalize a project and overall pretty intense. Nothing but the usual after all! But that time I made an important decision that sounded a bit like that “screw it, I am not doing ANYTHING this week end but chillax and rest ! I need it and totally deserve it.”

After a late morning in bed watching the movie “127 hours” (that has become my #1 favorite movie, I really recommend it), I decided at 1pm that it was a reasonable time to get up and open the only window of my quite dark flat… you know, to let some air in ! And air indeed came in… A warm breeze coming from the lake, refreshing and announcing only one thing: Spring had arrived !
What a feeling. That was enough to get me have a banana, wear my shorts and a sleeveless Tshirt, grab my hand bottle and two gel (when such excitement hits, you never know for how long you’re gonna be out there, so supplies are in order).

1.30pm I was running out the door, for a reason that didn’t occur since… well I don’t even remember. Lately, there has been only two reasons why I run. The first one is to stay fit and prepare my racing season, pretty basic.
The second one, that has unfortunately taken over the first one, is to shake the stress away, empty my mind, try and not hit nervous breakdown basically !

Well today, I was heading out into the mountains for neither of those reasons. I decided to leave my stress at home rather than try and get rid of it on the trails, and I didn’t want to train either. All I could think of, with a bright smile on my face as the sun hit me, “today I’m going easy, I’m just going to run for the sake of it.”

Now the story breaks down into two parts. The running part and the Entrepreneur part. Depending on your passions, you might want to stick to one or the other, unless like me, you are keen to EntrepRUNNER-ship !
